What Grandma Knew About Dry Skin — And What We Know Now

I can still picture the kinds of things our grandmothers kept on the bathroom counter.

A jar of cold cream.A bar of soap.Maybe one face cream that was used for everything.

And somehow, that was considered a complete skincare routine. 😂

Grandma may not have talked about ceramides, hyaluronic acid, peptides, or skin barriers. If you had brought any of that up, she probably would’ve laughed, dabbed a little cold cream on your nose, and told you to quit overthinking it.

But underneath all that simple wisdom, Grandma knew something important:

When skin feels dry and thirsty, it needs a little extra love.

The difference is, as we get older — especially through perimenopause and menopause — our skin may need a little more help than one trusty jar can give it.

Grandma might have used the same cream from age 30 to 80 without a single complaint.

For the rest of us? Our skin sometimes decides to change the rules without asking permission.

As estrogen drops, collagen, natural oils, and moisture levels can decline too. The skin barrier may become drier and more fragile, which means products you’ve happily used for years can suddenly stop doing the job.

Has any of this happened to you lately?

  • Your go-to cleanser makes your face feel two sizes too small.

  • Your foundation acts like a search-and-rescue dog, finding every tiny line.

  • You moisturize at 8:00 AM, and by lunchtime your cheeks feel like they’ve crossed the Sahara.

If you’re nodding your head, you’re definitely not alone.

The good news? You probably don’t need to throw everything out and start over. Your skin may simply be asking for more hydration and a gentler touch.

Give Your Routine a Small Update

Swap the squeaky cleanser. That tight, “squeaky clean” feeling isn’t always a good thing. Try a creamy, gentle cleanser and use lukewarm water. When you dry your face, leave it just slightly damp.

Give thirsty skin a drink. While your skin is still damp, gently press in a hydrating serum or booster, such as hyaluronic acid. Think of this step as giving your skin the water it’s been asking for.

Seal it in.Follow with moisturizer to help hold that hydration in. In the morning, finish with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. And bring that moisturizer down your neck and chest too — they’ve been along for the ride this whole time!

What Grandma Really Got Right

Grandma didn’t stare into a magnifying mirror trying to erase every line from her face.

She moisturized. She put on her lipstick. And she got on with her day.

There may be a pretty good lesson in that.

Our goal doesn’t have to be making our skin look 25 again.

The goal is helping the skin we have today feel comfortable, healthy, cared for, and loved.

Yes, we know more now. We have better ingredients and better ways to support changing skin.

But skincare still doesn’t have to be complicated.

Sometimes a good routine really can be this simple:

Cleanse gently.Add hydration.Seal it in.Protect it.

Grandma may not have called it a “skin barrier.”

She probably would’ve just called it taking care of yourself. 💕
