Stress, Age & Menopause… Oh My!

StWe’ve all heard the stories about the hot flashes, the mood swings, and the sudden shifts that come with the "change of life." But let’s be honest: stress and aging alone can pull a fast one on our skin, whether we’ve sailed right through menopause or are right in the thick of it.
Every woman’s journey is different. Some go through intense menopause symptoms, while others experience very few.
I’ve been very fortunate in many ways and haven’t experienced many of the traditional symptoms myself—but changing skin still seems to have a mind of its own sometimes!
Stress, age, hormones, and life itself can all leave their mark in different ways for all of us.
When stress levels spike and the years add up, our skin’s natural moisture barrier takes a hit.
If you’re noticing that your skin suddenly feels like a desert, you are not alone.
Why is This Happening?
As we age, our body naturally slows down its production of collagen and essential oils, leading to thinning, fragile skin (Khalid et al., 2022; Stanescu, 2025). When you throw chronic stress into the mix, things get even trickier.
According to dermatological research on how stress and hormones impact our skin barrier:
"Cortisol is a major driver of skin aging... High cortisol levels reduce the production of hyaluronic acid and lipids, which can lead to a compromised skin barrier, increased water loss, and dry, dehydrated skin" (Chameleon et al., 2022; Vladlenov, 2023).
That is exactly why stress leaves your face feeling like a desert! When cortisol compromises that precious skin barrier, your skin literally loses its ability to hold onto water (Chameleon et al., 2022). For many, menopause accelerates this even further because dropping estrogen levels cause an additional, rapid loss of moisture.

⚠️ A Note of Caution: Listen to Your Body!
While dry skin is a normal part of getting older and dealing with life's stresses, it is vital to pay close attention to what your body is trying to tell you.
Important Warning: Sudden, severe, or painful skin changes are not something you should ignore or try to treat with DIY remedies alone. If you experience extreme cracking, bleeding, intense itching that keeps you awake, or signs of infection (like redness, warmth, or pus), please consult your doctor or a dermatologist immediately.
Furthermore, rapid skin changes or profound dryness can sometimes be a sign of underlying medical issues—such as thyroid imbalances, severe nutrient deficiencies, or eczema—that require professional medical treatment.
Always trust your gut: if a symptom feels wrong or unmanageable, your first call should be to a healthcare provider.
Babs Tips: What You Can Try at Home
If you've checked in with your doctor and are simply dealing with standard, stubborn dryness, here are a few of my favorite ways to rescue your skin and bring back that healthy, radiant glow:
Lock in the Hydration: Look for rich, nourishing creams that feature hyaluronic acid and glycerin. These powerhouses act like magnets, pulling moisture deep into the skin and locking it there. (You can find generic brands in Walgreens , CVS stores, etc.)!
Back to Basics with Home Remedies: You don't always have to look further than your kitchen pantry for relief.
Oatmeal: Finely ground oatmeal is incredibly soothing for stressed, itchy, or dry skin. A simple colloidal oatmeal mask can calm redness in minutes.
Honey: A natural humectant, honey draws moisture from the air straight into your skin. Slur a little raw honey on dry patches for a quick, hydrating boost.
Cool Down the Cleanse: As tempting as a steaming hot shower is—especially when you're stressed—hot water strips away the natural oils your skin desperately needs. Switch to lukewarm water and opt for a gentle, creamy cleanser rather than harsh, stripping soaps.
Protect Your Barrier: When the skin barrier is dry, it’s more vulnerable to environmental damage.
Never skip your daily SPF, and consider adding a facial oil or a heavier night cream to your evening routine to act as a protective blanket while you sleep.
The truth is, our skin changes right along with our lives. Stress, hormones, aging, lack of sleep, changing seasons—it all plays a role. And while none of us can stop time, we can learn to care for ourselves a little more gently along the way.
Sometimes the biggest difference isn’t finding the “perfect” product… it’s simply listening to what our skin needs now instead of what worked 10 years ago.
💗 What about you? Have you noticed your skin changing with stress, age, or hormonal shifts? What has helped your skin feel healthier, calmer, or more hydrated lately?
I’d truly love to hear your thoughts, tips, or experiences in the comments.
